A tall, powerful leader-of-the-line player, he scored over 200 league goals and averaged a goal every other game for his country, yet he was unlucky to be in his prime at a time when England failed to qualify for the latter stages of the World Cup.

January 1968, Spurs broke the British transfer record, paying £125,000 to bring the player to White Hart Lane.  Initially he struggled with injury and it was not until the 1970-71 season that Chivers' latent potential began to be fully realised along with a maturity that was crystallised in February '71.
